Why I Designed My Own Camera Bag System

I've been chasing the right camera bag for decades.

The trouble I've found is that they're all different shapes and sizes. Some are too small, while others have dimensions that just don't work. Whether it's the height, width, or length, there's always something that doesn't quite fit.

You end up having to pull your camera apart just to pack it away.

We work in unpredictable environments and heavily rely on running and gunning, so I wanted a camera bag that could carry larger camera equipment, stack with my other gear, and adapt to whatever I needed it for.

Rather than designing another dedicated camera bag, I developed an insert that fits inside my 4 Wheeling Australia Gear Bag.

A camera bag when you need one, and a gear bag when you don't. Two jobs, one bag!

Make It Fit Your Gear

The insert measures 450 × 330 × 250 mm and comes with six padded dividers.

Four are mouldable, allowing you to shape them around your equipment. The other two are more rigid, providing additional support where needed.

I've got two camera bag setups I regularly use.

One carries my Sony FX6, which fits completely inside with the shotgun mic removed, although I usually leave it attached and zip the bag up to it.

Another carries my 600 mm lens, Canon cameras, lenses, and action camera equipment. I can even fit my complete drone bag inside!

And just because there's room doesn't mean you have to fill it. Having extra space makes it easier to organise your gear and get to what you need quickly.

The Little Things

• Bright red interior: Contrasts with black camera equipment, making gear easier to see and find.
• Soft brushed polyester lining: Protective foam padding and a tough Oxford cloth exterior help cushion delicate equipment.
• Additional protection: The insert works together with the structured outer Gear Bag.
• Six Velcro discs: Secure the insert inside the Gear Bag after you've slid it into place.
• Collapsible design: Both the Gear Bag and insert fold down for compact storage.
• Extra storage options: Compatible with our optional Zip Pocket and Twin Bungee Pocket accessories, best used with the rigid dividers.

A spare divider can also be positioned underneath delicate equipment for extra cushioning.

Not Just for Cameras

While designed around my filming equipment, the system is also useful for surveying equipment, measuring instruments, delicate tools, glassware, and other valuable items.

You configure the bag around your equipment rather than trying to make your equipment fit the bag.

Final Word

After decades of trying different camera bags, I finally had my own setup ready in 2026.

Having tested it over the last couple of months, I'm pretty stoked with how it's worked out and happy to finally launch it as part of my 4 Wheeling Australia storage system.
